A person can get success by hard work and if the thinking is good then success keeps on increasing continuously. Just like Chennai’s BL Bengani not only achieved success in his life with his hard work, but also found a unique way to save the environment. Plywood workers use tree wood, but Bengani also sell plywood and they don’t even cut trees for it. What’s more, his company collects a turnover of crores from this work. How do they do this work?
Plywood made from straw
After harvesting the crops of paddy and wheat, the farmers burn the stubble which is left because they do not understand any other use of it. At the same time, the smoke arising from the burning of this stubble remains the main cause of air pollution in many states. This is the reason why the central and state governments keep requesting the farmers not to burn the stubble.
Many people are still not able to understand the damage caused by it, but environmental sensitive people like Bengani have not only understood the seriousness of this problem but have also found a new way to solve it. Bengani has started a startup, in which he works in making plywood from stubble.
Know who is BL Bengani
BL Bengani is the founder of Chennai-based startup Indowood Design Technology. In this startup, 61-year-old Bengani is supporting his son Varun Bengani and daughter Priyanka Kucheria. In this startup started by Bengani, agri-waste like paddy straw is used to make plywood. This eco friendly natural fiber composite board can be used to make furniture, home decor or other items.
According to a special article in The Better India, BL Bengani, originally from Rajasthan, moved with his family to Kolkata in 1972. Bengani’s father used to work in a jute mill. Bengani told Better India that in those days his family was living like a lower middle class family.
To handle the situation of the family, Bengani had to come forward to work from 10th onwards. He could work during the day and did not miss his studies due to work, so that he took admission in an evening college. In this way he started working along with studies. Today, Bengani, who started a company worth crores and a unique startup, says that he started his work as an office boy.
Today’s crorepati used to get only 100 rupees a month in those days. After that he worked in many places. Along with work, his studies also continued and in the same way he did B.Com.
First worked in the company, then became the owner of the company
After completing B.Com, Bengani was looking for some good job and this job search took him from Kolkata to Chennai. It was in the year 1987 when Bengani got a job as an accountant in a company in Chennai. After this work, Bengani got an opportunity to handle marketing work in a plywood company.
The compulsions may have given jobs one after the other in Bengani’s hands, but in reality his mind was to start his own work instead of doing the job. While working, Bengani did not forget the dream of his own work. This was the reason that after taking experience of working in the plywood industry for a few years, he decided to open his own company.
Financially, he was not so capable, but despite this, he was ready to take the risk by trusting himself. He told Better India that he had got a good idea about this industry. He was sure that if he works hard, he will definitely get success. In the end, Bengani showed faith in himself and took the risk of starting his own business.
The turnover of the company was in crores
Bengani started selling high quality plywood boards from other countries in 1997. After that he started making boards by himself. He set up his own factory in 2001. He used to get raw material from Burma to make the board. 2010 was the year when Bengani found another partner in the form of his son to take over the company.
The company was doing well, giving a turnover of crores, but in spite of this, in 2014, Bengani made up his mind to leave this business. He wanted to do something different. Although it was a very risky move, it was Bengani’s good thinking behind it, due to which he was not afraid to take the risk. Eventually, in 2015, Bengani gave his company to another investor and started working on a separate startup himself.
Old business abandoned for principles
Bengani’s son Varun says that the biggest reason for doing so was his growing sensitivity towards the environment. Bengani and his sons wanted to do plywood work but they did not want to cut trees for this.
After much research, he started manufacturing high quality eco friendly plywood boards by mixing natural fiber, agri-waste and some other additives. Like other plywood, they can also be used to make furniture for home, hotel, cafe or any other place. Bengani says that the biggest thing about this plywood is that no animal has to be harmed to make them.
The whole process of making it is according to nature. According to Bengani, he believes in non-violence and wants to follow it in his work.
Farmers will benefit from this startup
Bengani’s daughter Priyanka, while talking to The Better India, said that she is currently buying the stubble used to make this plywood from paddy mills. The reason for this is that due to the corona epidemic and lockdown, it is not possible to go to the farmers and meet them and buy stubble.
At present, a team of 40 people is working with Bengani. He wants to increase his team further by 2022. Bengani says that the annual turnover of his new startup is in crores but his business has been affected due to Corona epidemic. Bengani expects that if everything is normal, then by 2022 their turnover will be higher than before.
