How Many Ounces in a Quart and How to Count

Here are my quick and easy conversions to calculate in ounces for ounces your fluids needed in a recipe! There are a few really simple amounts to remember, then making adjustments to your recipes on the fly will be a snap!

What is Quart?

A fluid quart, used to measure liquid volume, is equal to two pints or a quarter gallon. The Fluid Quart is available in two different sizes, the US Fluid Quart and the UK Imperial Quart.

Compared to the UK quart, the US quart (946.35 mL) is smaller (1136.52mL).

So, should you need to adjust a recipe that requires a quart, use a measuring cup to reach 1 quart because you’re on vacation and you only have a measuring cup, or just want to know.


As you go through your recipes, you may find that some metrics aren’t what you’re used to, or that you need to convert measurements from ounces to quasars. Since I love international cuisine, this is my most common issue when I see a swoon-worthy recipe from another country!

  • There are 32 ounces in a quart using the Imperial system of measurement. In America, the imperial system is currently used for measurement. It was originally called the “British Imperial System”, but when America was founded, we continued to use the Imperial system while many other countries around the world moved to the metric system.
  • Fluid ounces (for liquids) are not the same as weight by ounce . A tola (or a fluid ounce) is one ounce of water. You can see that many recipes call for cups. There are 4 cups in a quart, 8 per cup. There are 4 quarts in a gallon (literally a ‘quart’ of a gallon , which is where the name comes from) . And there are 2 pints in a quart, there are 16 fluid ounces in a pint.

Remember to use a measuring gadget designed for liquids, not dry ingredients .
